The Dr. Landy Bonelli German Wine Collection

The Dr. Landy Bonelli German Wine Collection

Picture2Hart Davis Hart Wine Co. is honored to represent The Dr. Landy Bonelli collection, an extraordinary and comprehensive compilation of rare German wines. The collection, which consists of more than 3,000 bottles with vintages ranging from 1937 to 2005, will be offered by Hart Davis Hart over several live auctions and an extensive retail offer, and has a potential value in excess of $1,000,000. Wines from Egon Müller, Fritz Haag, Joh. Jos. Prüm, Kloster Eberbach, and Schloss Johannisberg are just some of the many highlights throughout the list.

The history of Dr. Bonelli’s cellar dates back more than 35 years, when he started developing a passion for Riesling and collecting German wine as a young medical intern. In 1984, the bourgeoning collector was fortunate to meet Rudi Wiest, the renowned importer and founder of Rudi Wiest Selections. Wiest, who upon meeting Bonelli found him to already possess an “amazing collection of great Rieslings from Germany,” has since worked with the Doctor to secure many more stellar wines, helping to curate and build the collection that exists today. Many of the wines were purchased during visits to Germany directly from the Trier & Kloster Eberbach auctions, or through the Wisconsin distributor network.

Picture4As a meticulous collector, Dr. Bonelli maintained extensive records of his purchases, including original purchase receipts and a ledger detailing each bottle, specific AP number, and notes about the wine. His custom temperature-controlled cellar has incredible natural humidity (below grade), vapor barriers, and a separate backup generator. Accordingly, the wines are in pristine condition. The first parcel will be offered on June 27 & 28 at HDH’s live auction, and a large retail offering will follow over the summer. A complete list of receipts and additional photos will be available on hdhwine.com.

The boasts over 380 bottles across 25 vintages from Egon Müller’s renowned Scharzhofberger vineyard. Additional highlights include vast selections from Joh. Jos. Prüm featuring the Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich vineyards from the great 1971, 1975, 1976, 1990 and 2001 vintages. The collection is full of wines of all ripeness levels, and includes a huge number of special bottlings—gold capsule, long gold capsule, and auction wines.

In many ways, Dr. Bonelli’s ascension as one of the country’s most renowned collectors on German wine was due in large part to an informal education gleaned from firsthand experience. Over the past four decades, Dr. Bonelli has made numerous trips to Mosel, and has met with the world’s finest producers. His interest in the subject matter led to close personal relationships with leading producer such as Egon Müller-Scharzhoff and J.J. Prüm, and inspired him to found the Milwaukee German Wine Club and part of the German Wine Society. Recently, in 2010, Dr. Bonelli helped to organize a Historic Tasting of Trockenbeerenauslesen commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Verband Deutscher Prädikats-und Qualitätsweingüter (VDP,) an association of top German estates.

In our business in particular, the last 12 months have seen a considerable rise in interestContinue Reading

Pop Culture and Wine: Wines for the Game of Thrones Premiere

To say that our team is excited about the Game of Thrones premiere would be a huge understatement. While the Season 4 kick-off is still a few days away (Sunday, April 6th), our team debated over what modern wines each house would drink in their theoretical worlds. It was a lively discussion with many opinions onContinue Reading

The Best Corkage Fee in Town

The Best Corkage Fee in Town

I am an absolute nut when it comes to bringing wine to restaurants. It started six years ago when I was living in San Francisco. San Francisco is notorious for having corkage-friendly policies as one might expect, given its proximity to Napa and Sonoma. I found the city’s policies to be very encouraging, particularly since I was/stillContinue Reading
