Green Shippers: Collecting Wine, Not Styrofoam.

Green Shippers: Collecting Wine, Not Styrofoam.

Behind every collection of wine, however small or large, there is a great deal of care that has been given to the handling of each bottle. A bottle might travel around the globe (more than once!) before it’s ever opened, and to ensure that first sip is everything the collector has hoped for it must be packaged and stored with consideration to its delicate nature every step of the way. Most obviously the bottle has to be protected from breakage – a pile of glass and some damp cardboard is a pile of bitter disappointment. To this end, retailers and sellers around the world – particularly with smaller volumes – repack wines in specialized wine shippers for transit. Styrofoam is the most common variety, and it provides a high-level of protection from blunt force damage (i.e. slippery fingers) while helping to minimize temperature fluctuations over short periods of time.

The monster in the cellar.

The monster in the cellar.

But there is a dark side to Styrofoam, one which most collectors find themselves facing sooner or later. Styrofoam shippers are at best usable a couple of times before they begin to lose their structural integrity – so retailers often don’t want them back, and they take up a lot of space. For the thirsty collector, Styrofoam can quickly pile up and become a nuisance. There is little in the way of recycling for Styrofoam, leaving most no choice but to add their old packaging to the local landfill.

As collectors ourselves, we are no stranger to this phenomenon. In 2012 Hart Davis Hart began working with our Styrofoam manufacturer on a more durable model, one that could be reused numerous times. After several prototypes and rigorous testing, we rolled out our green shipper.

Responsible packaging.

Responsible packaging.

Our green shippers – available in 6 bottle and 12 bottle cases – offer all the same benefits as standard Styrofoam, and are made of a more durable polyethylene foam. They can be re-used innumerable times, and with Hart Davis Hart’s return label, you never need worry about disposing of a Styrofoam shipper again.

To have your next order shipped in a green shipper, simply check the “Green Shipping” checkbox from the first checkout screen or make the request to one of our sales associates. When your order is processed, you will be charged shipping along with a fully refundable deposit for the green shipper – $10 for a 6pk, $20 for a 12pk.

We include return shipping labels inside each green shipper that goes out our doors. Once you have unpacked your wines, apply the return label to the top of the box and drop off at your local FedEx office. Your deposit is automatically refunded in full once your shipper(s) arrive back at Hart Davis Hart.

For every green shipper used, there is one less piece of Styrofoam that will spend eternity in your cellar or a landfill – and with 2.3 million tons of Styrofoam accumulating in landfills every year, this is no small thing. Please consider choosing to be a part of our green shipping initiative when you place your next order with Hart Davis Hart.
